It’s an impressive monster of movie and this “making of” is nicely polished and has some candy even for the seasoned techs amongst us. I saw the movie twice already and will want to see it again before the end of the theater run, but with all due respect to Cameron and Weta digital (and they deserve a LOT of respect…) they did not “come up with” the techniques used for facial capture…
We used the very same methods of capturing the face over 10 years ago on “The Boxer” and the in-house software used to translate the capture to the CG character proved to be scarily accurate with the latest facial banks we developed. Don’t get me wrong, I think the end result is stunning and they definitely improved on the hardware design (light, tight and certainly HD capable), what the the crazy budgets they had. But 10 years is a mighty long time in tech years… It’s absolutely NORMAL that they got to this point by now. I’m just saying, it was initially done with great accuracy 10 years ago.
